It was a solid weekend for the TEKNO Autosports’ second outing with XFORCE in 2016 at last weekend’s 2016 Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park in Melbourne.
Will Davison in the #19 Holden Commodore had a rough start to the non-championship weekend, hitting the wall early on during Practice 2 on Thursday afternoon. But Team TEKNO worked hard for a quick turnaround to get him out for a crack at qualifying, with Davison eventually starting from P16 for Race 1. Davison stayed in P16 for Race 1, which determined his starting position for the following race. Race 2 was a more positive affair, as he edged his way up to P14 to round out Friday afternoon’s racing action. Race 3 had a downpour come across Albert Park, and unfortunately Davison was one of the unlucky few who was caught out by the wet weather, tangling with the #6 of Cameron Waters and sending Davison back in the pack to finish in P19 for the #19 Commodore. Combined points determined the V8 Supercars grid for Race 4, and with Davison starting in P18 he charged forward past five cars in only twelve laps to come home in P13.
It was another three car effort for TEKNO Autosports in the Australian GT Championship, with three McLaren 650S GT3s once again racing around the Melbourne circuit. Jonathon Webb in #59 started from the front row for Race 1, but unfortunately fell back to P18 by the end of the race. Meanwhile, Nathan Antunes in #61 and Nathan Morcom in #60 finished in P15 and P10 respectively. Race 2 saw inclement weather posing a continuous threat leading up to the morning race. The whole TEKNO Autosports cohort chose to start the race on slick tyres, benefitting at the end of the sighting lap when many others chose to forfeit their grid positions and swap to slicks in pit lane. This move helped Morcom in #60 to a race win, while Elliot Barbour in #61 finished in P4 Grant Denyer in #59 finished behind him to round out the top 5. Pole-sitter Morcom was jumped by Ferrari’s Andrea Montermini at the start of Race 3, with the #60 McLaren eventually finishing in P6. Antunes finished in P10, while Webb followed closely behind in P12. Denyer and Barbour were locked together in combat for most of Race 4, with the #61 of Barbour eventually taking P7 and the #59 of Denyer finishing in P11. Morcom fought hard early in the race, but ended up in P15 at the end of the race.
TEKNO Autosports will have their next outing for V8 Supercars at Symmons Plains in Tasmania on April 1-3.
